ABS
Most cars on the road today have some form of
Antilock Brake System (ABS).
Modern ABS systems electronically monitor the
speed of the wheels and regulate the hydraulic pressure accordingly.
The aim is to maximize braking power while preventing the wheels
from locking and skidding.
Brake pressure is automatically modulated during
an emergency stop, preventing wheel lock-up. By preventing
the wheels from locking, it enables the driver to maintain steering
control and to stop in the shortest possible distance under most
conditions.
SRS (AIR BAG)
Airbags, one of the most important recent
inventions in vehicle safety, will
inflate milliseconds after a serious crash begins and provide
a safety cushion between a person and the hard interior of a
car. Most common are frontal airbags located in the
steering wheel(driver) and the dash panel on the left for the
passenger. These airbags will inflate in the event of a head
on crash and prevent injury.
Recent developments include side airbags and even
roof airbags.
Tests in America on vehicles with side airbags
show that many of the nearly 10,000 occupants killed each year in side-impact
collisions could be saved if side airbags were fitted to the vehicles.
ETC (ELECTRONIC TRACTION CONTROL)
Traction control deals specifically with lateral
(front-to-back) loss of friction during acceleration.
When the traction control system senses that the wheels
have begun to slip, this data
is fed back to the control unit, which adjusts throttle input
and applies braking force to slow the wheels. The wheels are
thus prevented from spinning and the car maintains maximum traction.
Think of it as ABS in reverse.
